How Your Relationship with Your Spouse Affects Your Heart

Your relationship with your spouse can affect your heart, literally and figuratively. A new study shows that negative interactions with your spouse can increase your risk for heart disease by 8.5%. Negative interactions are also linked to thicker carotid arteries, blood vessels that carry blood through the neck to the brain, which can lead to strokes.

Researchers looked at 281 healthy adults in relationships and had them answer questions about their relationship satisfaction. Researchers also measured their carotid arteries using ultrasound imaging. Blood pressure did not seem to explain the thickness of arteries in those who reported having more  negative interactions with their spouses or partners.

The study adds more evidence to the existing body of research which shows a connection between spousal relationships and health. More….
