Illinois TB Patient Ordered to Stay Home

An Illinois man who has pulmonary tuberculosis (TB), was ordered by a judge to stay home alone and was warned that if he failed to comply he would be taken into custody. The judge told the man that a nurse would visit him daily to administer his medications. The patient, Ibanda, however, was not at home when the nurse visited him, and was later found to have been out shopping. He did not show up for a hearing, and it’s not known what consequences he’ll be facing for missing the hearing. He was diagnosed in March.

Tuberculosis is highly contagious and deadly and spreads through coughing or sneezing. According to doctors, pulmonary TB responds to treatment, unlike other forms that are drug-resistant. With regular treatment, Ibanda could become noninfectious in five weeks and cured in six months to a year. More….
