Manicurists Are Exposed to Dangerous Chemicals Every Day – Nail products that manicurists use while catering to their customers, contain harmful chemicals, such as such as dibutyl phthalate, toluene and formaldehyde that cause a number of side-effects.

The New York Times interviewed 125 nail salon workers over a year and found that the chemicals cause serious harm including skin infections, respiratory problems, and even miscarriages. Children born to manicurists often have birth defects or other developmental problems. Salon owners and the cosmetic industry do nothing to protect their employees, in fact, they actively discourage employees from wearing protective masks and gloves when manicuring customers because such protective gear would look “unsightly.”

Nail product ingredients like dibutyl phthalate, toluene and formaldehyde are banned in Europe and carry health warnings in Australia, but in the US, these chemicals in cosmetic products do not require approval from the US Food and Drug Administration.

The report says that there have been very few studies that focus on this issue. Health advocates and organizations like the California Healthy Nail Salon Collaborative have been pushing for legislation banning the harmful chemicals.
