Matcha is the latest culinary craze – Matcha is the latest food craze you might not know about, but one taste and you’ll be hooked.

This ancient, finely milled green tea powder has been a staple in the Japanese tea world for decades but only recently started to gain popularity in the US. It can be used in pastries, cocktails, smoothies and even ice cream. Culinary matcha is a lower grade powder typically made of leaves that are lower on the matcha branch.

The green tea extract is known for it health benefits, and has been used in Japanese tea ceremonies for a long time. Experts recommend using the green tea powder in a tea latte, but chefs are finding creative ways of using the green powder, and have been adding them to various food items, such as pastries, cocktails, cookies and cream puffs, smoothies and ice cream.

Matcha is stoneground green tea leaves, and is full of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and amino acids. According to experts, the health benefits of matcha tea are greater than regular green tea, as you consume the whole matcha leaf when you brew the tea and not just the tea-steeped water, and as such, one cup of matcha tea is equal to 10 of green tea in terms of nutritional value.

Matcha is known for its cancer-fighting, fat-burning, and anti-aging antioxidant properties. Matcha contains the unique amino acid L-Theanine, which helps reduce stress and at the same time, keeps you alert. Mactha was used in ancient Japan by monks to help them in their meditation.
