Millennials experience depression at work more than any other generation, study finds – For the first time in history, five distinct generations โ€” traditionalists, baby boomers, Gen X, millennials and Gen Z โ€” will soon work side-by-side in the workplace.

A new study shows they won’t react to the same office environment in the same way. Millennials reported the highest rates of depression โ€” approximately 1 in 5 millennials who sought out employee assistance or work-life advice from Bensinger, DuPont & Associates. They suffered from presentiism, where they would show up for work but could not function to full capacity because of the depression. In contrast, 16% of baby boomers and 16% Gen Xers reported depression.

BDA released the white paper, Depression and Work: The Impact of Depression on Different Generations of Employees this week as part of National Mental Health Awareness Month. The paper is based on data the company collected from employees using its EAP services over 18 months.
