More Dementia Cases in Northern Countries

More Dementia Cases in Northern Countries – A new study conducted by researchers at Edinburgh University suggests that people living in northern countries like Scotland and Sweden are more likely to suffer from dementia as they age.

Scientists looked at two studies, one with 37,000 people in Scotland born in 1921, and the other with 26,000 Swedish twins. The Scottish study showed a significant increase in the risk for dementia depending on where participants lived as adults.

The Scottish study showed that twins living in the north were two or three times more likely to develop dementia than those living in the south.

Researchers attribute these findings to environmental factors such as lack of sunlight. Vitamin D has been linked to healthy brain function, and vitamin D is produced naturally in our bodies when exposed to sunlight. According to the lead author, Dr. Tom Russ, dementia cases can be halved by addressing these environmental factors.
