New Lens May Help Correct Many Vision Problems

New Lens May Help Correct Many Vision Problems – A new lens implant called Symfony, is being successfully used by doctors in the UK to rectify various age-related vision problems like cataract, astigmatism, and short-sight.

The lens is inserted into the lens capsule of the eye and replaces the natural lens during a cataract surgery. The plastic lens implant has circular grooves which extend the range of vision and allow more light in. UK eye surgeons say that the lens can correct problems like astigmatism without the side effects, such as halo and glare that show up after the standard monofocal lens cataract surgery.

The lens has been commercially available in the UK since this summer, and London Eye Hospital medical director, Dr. Bobby Qureshi says he gets a lot of hugs from old people after the surgery, and says, ” …it will last almost forever,” Qureshi says. “Everybody [with them] will get good far vision, they’ll get good intermediate vision and in about 80 to 90 percent of people, they will be able to read comfortably — even small print — without glasses,” he adds.

The lens has not been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration yet.
