New Nanomedicine for Glaucoma

| June 5, 2014 Comment

Scientists in Singapore have developed a new nanomedicine for glaucoma patients that’s more effective than the current eye drops they need to take.

Glaucoma is the leading cause of blindness in the elderly, and is caused by high intra-ocular pressure in the eye which eventually damages the optic nerve. Current treatment involves daily application of eye drops to reduce the pressure. However, according to experts, nearly 10% of the blindness from glaucoma is currently caused by patients failing to use these drops regularly. Many elderly patients forget to use the drops, find it too troublesome, or don’t understand the importance of using the eye drops.

The new nanomedicine is delivered to the eye via a painless injection, and it releases the anti-glaucoma medicine slowly over a period of six months, eliminating the need for patients to use daily drops. The nano-sized capsules contain the well-known and approved glaucoma drug, Latanoprost.

The scientists are planning large-scale clinical trials for the nanomedicine. More….
