New Study Finds Height Is 80% Genetics – Researchers have found new gene regions and variants which will contribute to knowing more about human height and disease. 80 percent of a person’s height is determined by genes.

If you’re short, blame your parents. A new study in the journal, Nature Genetics, found that 80% of a person’s height is determined by genes. The study looked at over a quarter million people in Europe, North America, and Australia – all with European ancestry. They found 423 new gene regions and variants that determine height, many of which had not been previously known to affect skeletal growth.

So, what accounts for the last 20% of the height? Some of it is due to environmental factors and nutrition. What’s more … researchers found that the average human height has actually increased over the last few generations.

Experts say that the study of the genetics of height could lead to better understanding of how genes act together – particularly, we might gain more information about diseases like obesity, diabetes, and asthma.
