New Yorkers Sit for Too Long – According to a new study published in the journal, Preventing Chronic Disease, New Yorkers sit for an average of seven hours which may be endangering their health.

Researcher Stella Yi of the New York University School of Medicine, with help from the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, analyzed 2010-2011 survey results of almost 3,600 New Yorkers, and data data from 667 people who agreed to wear gadgets to track their time spent moving—or not. According to the self-reported data, participants sat for 4 hours during daytime, and for another 3 hours in the evening. Manhattan residents spent 8 hours sitting.

Participants who were 65 and older sat for an average of 9 hours, more than other age-groups. There was no difference between the sexes in terms of how long they spent sitting. Among participants who wore movement tracking devices, sitting time average even more – almost 8 hours a day.

Researchers say that serious intervention measures may need to be taken to get New Yorkers moving to prevent health problems from lack of physical activity. Sitting for long hours can lead to obesity, diabetes, hypertension, varicose veins, leg swelling and leg ulcers, and skin changes.
