Obesity and Hot Flashes

Obesity and hot flashes seem to be connected, according to researchers.

Obese and overweight women seem to have more severe hot flashes during menopause than women with normal weight. According to gynecologists, part of the reason could be the extra fat which makes dissipation of heat more difficult. These women may also be on diets every now and then, which affects estrogen levels, and fluctuating estrogen levels make it difficult for the body to regulate temperature.

The new study observed 40 menopausal women experiencing menopausal hot flashes. Participants who were put on a weight-loss program for six months reported fewer hot flashes than those who weren’t. Also, women who experienced the most relief were those closest to their final menstrual cycle.
