Oxytocin Helps Men Lose Weight in Study – A new study found that the love hormone, oxytocin, can help men lose weight by making them consume fewer calories.

The study participants were 25 healthy men, who were randomly given a single dose of synthetic oxytocin spray or a placebo after fasting. An hour later, the men were given double portions of breakfast they had ordered. Researchers then recorded how many calories each of the men consumed. They found that those who had received the oxytocin consumed 122 fewer calories on average than those who were given a placebo, and also showed an improved insulin sensitivity.

The research was led by Dr. Elizabeth Lawson, an assistant professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, and results were presented at The Endocrine Society’s annual meeting. According to Dr. Lawson, “Further study is needed, but I think oxytocin is a promising treatment for obesity and its metabolic complications.”

Made by Novartis, the oxytocin spray has also been found to help children with autism, as well as with alcohol withdrawal symptoms. The hormone, oxytocin is released during breast-feeding and promotes bonding between mother and baby.
