Patient Requests for Cancer Test Usually Right

Patient requests for cancer tests are usually right, according to a new study.

Researchers surveyed 26 oncologists and nurses after 2,050 patient visits. Results showed that cancer patients were usually right when they asked for cancer scans, blood tests, experimental drugs, and clinical trials. Eighty percent of the time, patient requests were approved and accepted as appropriate by physicians. Only 18% of the time the requests were considered inappropriate or not beneficial. This debunks the myth about patient demands leading to high healthcare costs.

The study results will be presented at the annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology in Chicago in June. More….
