“Pee-Power” Will Light Refugee Camps

“Pee-Power” Will Light Refugee Camps – A pioneering toilet that uses urine to generate electricity may soon light up dark corners of refugee camps and disaster zones around the world.

The toilet, developed at the University of the West of England in Bristol, uses live microbes which feed on urine – and convert it into power. The prototype looks a lot like the toilets currently used in refugee camps, while the the microbial fuel cells in which the electricity is generated, are stacked underneath the urinal and can be viewed through a screen.

Conveniently located near the University of the West of England’s student bar, the toilet has already been successfully tested by students, whose urine produced enough electricity to power four LED light bulbs.
