This Peppery Green Papaya Curry adds color and a different taste to your regular meals. Green or raw papaya is popular in South India, and is used to make a variety of savory dishes. This easy vegetarian/vegan recipe uses a slightly ripe papaya and makes a great side for plain rice.

Servings: 4
Cooking Time: 20 minutes

Ingredients

  • 5 cups green papaya, cut into small cubes
  • Turmeric powder, a pinch
  • 1/4 tsp red chilli powder
  • 1 tbsp cilantro (coriander leaves), finely chopped
  • Salt to taste

For Masala

  • 1 tsp black pepper corn
  • 1 tbsp rice

For Seasoning

  • 3 tsp vegetable oil
  • 2 tsp urad dal (split black gram)
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1 red chilli, broken into a couple of pieces
  • 5-6 curry leaves

Preparation

  1. Heat a small pan and roast the rice and pepper corn until the rice becomes fluffy and lightly brown. When cool, grind into a coarse powder in a spice grinder.
  2. Heat the oil in a medium skillet. Add the urad dal and mustard seeds and fry until the dal is almost golden and the mustard starts to pop. Add the red chilli and curry leaves and fry for a few seconds.
  3. Add the green papaya, along with turmeric and salt. Stir well, sprinkle a little water, and cover and cook for 4-5 minutes on medium-high heat until almost tender. Stir occasionally.
  4. Sprinkle the rice and pepper corn powder and red chilli powder, and saute for 2 minutes.
  5. Garnish the peppery green papaya curry with cilantro.
  6. Serve the peppery green papaya curry with a dash of lime juice with plain rice.
