Pepsi Plans to Ditch Aspartame in Diet Pepsi – Bowing to consumer demand to ditch aspartame, PepsiCo will debut aspartame-free Diet Pepsi in the US later this year, the company confirmed Friday.

PepsiCo North America Beverages said in a release, “Diet cola drinkers in the US told us they wanted aspartame-free Diet Pepsi and we’re delivering. We recognize that consumer demand is evolving and we’re confident that cola-lovers will enjoy the crisp, refreshing taste of this new product.”

Diet Pepsi, Caffeine Free Diet Pepsi and Wild Cherry Diet Pepsi will now use artificial sweeteners sucralose and acesulfame potassium in the US.

Aspartame is a common sweetener available under brand names NutraSweet and Equal. Aspartame is made by joining together the amino acids aspartic acid and phenylalanine, and is used in many products in lieu of sugar as it’s sweeter, and not much is needed to sweeten products, thereby reducing calories in a product.

Aspartame has been associated with many side-effects, from mild to dangerous, such as headaches and dizziness to cancer and brain tumors. But the National Cancer Institute and other health agencies, there’s no scientific evidence that any of the artificial sweeteners used in the US cause cancer or other serious health problems, and say that they’re safe in limited quantities.
