Prevent the Sitting Disease with This Easy Exercise – Research has shown that those who sit for long hours every day, either for work or just because, are at a greater risk for heart disease, diabetes, cancer and even death. Researchers say that it’s very easy to prevent this “sitting disease” – all you have to do is walk for 2 minutes for every hour you are awake.

For the study, researchers looked at physical activity data on 3,243 adults who took part in the National Health and Nutrition Examination. Participants wore accelerometers to track their activity. Researchers then examined the duration and intensity of activities and the impact it had on the lifespan pf participants who sat for more than half of their waking hours. In particular, they focused on low intensity activities included standing, note taking or making a bed;light intensity activities included casual walking, light gardening or cleaning.

Researchers found that just 2 minutes of low intensity activity every hour can reduce the risk of death by as much as 33%. According to Srinivasan Beddhu, MD, professor at the University of Utah School of Medicine, 2 minutes every hour, if you’re awake for 16 hours a day, will add up to 3.7 hours per week of light intensity activity. The fact that even light activity can have a beneficial impact of health is interesting, and should be easy to follow for for people.

The study was published in the Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology (CJASN).
