Problems of Cancer Survivors

Problems of Cancer Survivors – While early detection of cancer and better treatments are allowing cancer patients to live longer, research shows that survivors still struggle with several issues, and researchers are now focusing on how to help these survivors deal with the aftermath.

Cancer survivors suffer from a whole host of problems – from side-effects of radiation and other treatments and medications, to physical pain and anxiety and financial problems. According to Rebecca Kirch, director of quality of life and survivorship at the American Cancer Society, there are only a few clinics in the country that are dedicated to providing care for cancer survivors, and many hospitals only provide patchwork care.

A recent study conducted by Dr. Mary Ann Burg, professor of social work at the University of Central Florida, shows that the top three unmet needs of cancer survivors are physical issues, such as pain and sexual dysfunction; financial needs; and a need for education and information about surviving cancer, follow-up care and self-care. The study suggests that health care providers and primary care physicians should be aware of and help with long-term effects of cancer diagnosis and treatment of patients.

Some clinics and oncologists are addressing these issues. For instance, Dr. Louis Barr, medical director of the Florida Hospital Cancer Institute, is developing a survivorship plan which includes documentation they give their patients on how to deal with some of the problems and care issues that crop up after surviving the disease.
