Recalled yogurt may pose a health risk to all consumers, according to a new study.

In September 2013, Chobani Greek yogurt was recalled when it was found to have been contaminated with a fungus, Murcor circinelloides, and many consumers fell ill. Initially, it was believed that only those with a weak immune system were affected, but the study shows that even healthy people who had eaten the yogurt had complained of gastrointestinal problems.

Researchers found that the strain of fungus that caused the outbreak was commonly associated with infections. When tested on mice, the infections caused were deadly. Generally, fungal pathogens are not food-borne, but this strain shows the need for more research as they could threaten our health systems. The results of the study were published in mBio. More….
