Researchers Identify Factors Leading to Celiac Disease – A new study from Sweden has identified factors that may cause the development of celiac disease, which include type 1 diabetes, maternal celiac disease, sex of the child, and perinatal factors.

Celiac disease is characterized by gas, bloating, malabsorption of food, weight-loss and other digestive issues. The disease is the immune system’s response to gluten, which is found in wheat rye, and barley. There is no cure for celiac disease; people who suffer from the disease can manage their symptoms by eating a gluten-free diet.

Researchers, led by Louise Emilsson, examined data from the Norwegian Mother and Child Cohort Study involving 95,200 women and their 114,500 children. They found that 685 children had celiac disease, and found that while birth weight and height were not associated with the disease, the sex of the child, and whether the mother had celiac disease and type 1 diabetes were.

The study was published in the journal, Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology.
