Should You Buy Organic Milk?

| January 13, 2015 Comment

Should You Buy Organic Milk? If you’ve asked yourself this question, the answer, according to consumerreports.org, is a resounding YES. Organic milk costs about a couple of dollars more per gallon, but it might be worth it for the taste and nutrition it provides.

US Department of Agriculture  (USDA) requires organic farmers to follow its organic production rules, and makes sure the farmers follow through by inspecting the foods annually and issuing organic certification. For milk to be labeled as organic, farmers need to make sure they feed the cows only 100% certified organic feed, that is. grass, which is grown without the use of pesticides, herbicides, or synthetic fertilizers.

Dairy cows are not allowed to be given growth hormones and antibiotics, nor can they be fed genetically modified foods.

As for the nutritional aspects of organic milk, studies have shown that organic milk has higher amounts of vitamin E, beta-carotene, omega-3 fatty acids, and antioxidants. Organic milk also contains higher amounts of healthy fat – conjugated linoleic acid or CLA.
