Skinny Jeans May Damage Muscles and Nerves

Skinny Jeans May Damage Muscles and Nerves – Doctors have reported a number of cases where tight-fitting jeans have caused tingly, and numb thighs, and damage to nerves and muscles.

The newest case is that of a 35-year-old Australian woman, who had to be cut out of her skinny jeans because of a severe swelling in her calves. The woman developed a condition called compartment syndrome, after squatting for long hours to empty cupboards during a house move. The condition was worsened by her tight jeans, and she was taken to the hospital when her feet became numb and she couldn’t walk. Doctors put her on an intravenous drip and it took her four days to recover.

According to experts, compartment syndrome is caused by extreme pressure within a confined body space or bundle of muscles, such as a leg or forearm or abdomen. It can be potentially dangerous because the swelling and pressure obstructs the flow of blood to and from the affected tissues and may, in severe cases, require surgery to prevent permanent damage.

A new study shows that the trendy, low-cut, and tight-fitting jeans can also cause meralgia paresthetica – pain, numbness or burning sensation and hypersensitivity in the outer thigh.

However, experts say, that such cases are an exception, and there’s no reason to ditch your skinny jeans. They suggest that if you wear them, you may want to move around every now and then to make sure your blood circulation is not affected.
