Space Station Gets an Italian Espresso Maker – NASA AMES Center in Moffett Field, CA is sending some much-needed supplies to the space center … among them is an Italian espresso machine for an Italian astronaut in the international space station.

No more “suffering through instant coffee” for her. The Italian astronaut, Samantha Cristoforetti, arrived at the space station last November, and has been managing with instant coffee all these months.

The Italian-made espresso maker is called ISSpresso after the International Space Station. Italian coffee maker Lavazzo and Turin-based engineering company, Argotec and the Italian Space Agency designed the machine especially for use in space.

According to Dan Hartman, NASA’s space station program deputy manager, they do everything they can to help make the astronauts comfortable and at home, as they have to spend several months to a year  in orbit.

The SpaceX cargo spacecraft will be delivering nearly 4,000 pounds of supplies to the space station and is scheduled for lift-off this afternoon from Cape Canaveral in Florida.
