Standup Desks May Help with the Sitting Disease – According to a study conducted by the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys, almost 60% to 70% office-goers sit for 6-7 hours every day and suffer from the “sitting disease” – a host of health problems such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease and obesity – which can all lead to early death. Experts say that even people who exercise regularly and are generally more active can be susceptible to health problems if they sit for long hours.
The American Council on Exercise (ACE) has offered its workers the option of standing workstations for more than two years, and reports that employees feel more energetic and mentally alert. The standup desks are better for your leg muscles, blood circulation, and your spine. You can also burn more calories just by standing at your desk.
However, standing for long hours can be bad as well. Studies show that it can increase the risk of hardening arteries and varicose veins. So the best option is to alternate between sitting and standing, and make sure you are active for at least 5-10 minutes every hour.
