Study: Walnuts May Help Prevent Alzheimer’s Disease – The nuts contain protective antioxidants that ward off the effects of amyloid beta, which is linked to Alzheimer’s.

A new study says that walnuts could be the answer to preventing Alzheimer’s disease. The study showed that mice that consumed walnuts showed significant improvement in learning and memory skills compared to mice that didn’t. Improvement was also seen in motor skills and reduction of anxiety.

Researchers said the mice consumed a human equivalent of 1 – 1.5 oz of walnut per day. Lead researcher Abha Chauhan said that walnuts contain protective compounds like omega-3 fatty acids. These compounds ward off oxidative damage caused by amyloid beta, the protein identified to cause Alzheimer’s.

The research was published in the October issue of the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease (JAD).

On a list of foods with anti-oxidative properties, walnuts came in at an impressive second behind blackberries.
