Fads come and go, which is why sugar waxing isn’t exactly a fad. Even though sugaring might seem like the new ‘it’ thing to do, this hair-removal technique has actually been in use throughout the Middle East since 1900 BC.by Egyptian men and women, who associated smooth, hairless skin with youth and beauty.

Just as with waxing, an experienced technician will spread the sugary paste, a combination of sugar, water and lemon juice, across your skin in the direction of hair growth. After the hairs are completely coated, he or she will apply a cloth or paper strip and quickly tear it off against the direction of growth. As with waxing, the hair is removed from the root, which means it’ll sting a bit and there’ll be some expected swelling. But since sugaring relies on an all-natural, resin free paste, your skin is left less irritated when compared to waxing.

Wax also needs to be heated, which can result in burns on the treated areas and can adhere to the skin, causing damage to the top layer of sensitive tissue cells when it’s torn away. On the other hand, sugar paste can be applied at a lukewarm temperature and easily washed away with water.

All things considered, the results are pretty similar. Both sugaring and waxing will leave your skin smooth for up to 4 weeks. But keep in mind, depending on hair and skin type the results will vary. And since sugaring is still new to most salons and spas, a lack of knowledge — from mastering the paste’s consistency to removal to sanitary needs — could lead to rashes, broken hairs, ingrown hairs and ultimately, infections.

So look for an experienced aesthetician at a reputable salon or spa. And as always, check with your doctor before undergoing any hair removal procedure and discuss any medical conditions you may have with the technician.
