Thirty Percent of World’s Population is Obese`

Almost thirty percent of the world’s population is obese or overweight , according to new research. Researchers used data from 188 countries from 1980 to 2013.

The United States has the largest obese population with 13% of its population obese. Countries in the Middle East, North Africa, Central America, the Pacific and Caribbean Islands have reached extremely high obesity rates. Among women, the biggest increase in obesity is in Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Honduras, and Bahrain, while among men, it is New Zealand, Bahrain, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and the US. The results of the research were reported in the medical journal, Lancet.

In 33 years, the number of obese has risen from 857 million in 1980 to 2.1 billion in 2013. A condition that once affected only the affluent is now all-pervasive, mainly because of easy access to cheap, fatty, sugary, salty, high-calorie junk food and a sedentary lifestyle.
