Three Tips to Running More Efficiently

Three Tips to Running More Efficiently – Host Judy Greer learns how to run more efficiently with the help of endurance expert Brian Harkins. Harkins breaks down the efficient form to three key elements: Posture, falling, and pulling. Two of his top tips: – Hold your head up and look forward, not down. – Remember to “fall,” leaning forward without bending at the waist.

The 3 key elements for running efficiently include:

  • Posture – When we run, we want to look forward, so keep your head up. Keep shoulders and hips in line; don’t bend at the waist. Arms should be at a 90° angle to your body, and pretend you’re holding a potato chip between your thumb and forefinger and you don’t want to break it. Make sure you’re moving your arms from wrist to elbow.
  • Falling – When you’re running, make sure you’re falling, or leaning forward, that your whole body is at a forward angle, and not just from your waist up.
  • Pulling – When running, pull your foot up and under so it’s right next to your knee. Let gravity pull your foot back down. Land on either the ball of the foot or midfoot, not the heel. The heel should only touch the ground with each step.

Try to keep a minimum cadence of 90 steps/foot/minute.
