Tips for Preventing Food-Borne Illnesses

Registered dietitians offer tips for preventing food-borne illnesses, which increase in summer as more people prepare and eat their meals outdoors. When exposed to hot temperatures, food can spoil easily and become a breeding ground for bacteria.

According to the US Centers for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC), 48 million Americans fall sick every year from eating spoiled food, 128,ooo are hospitaized, and 3,000 die from food-borne illnesses.

Experts say that the best way to prevent food poisoning is to store and handle foods carefully. Refrigerating perishables to prevent spoilage and washing hands before and after handling food is important. They also recommend discarding any food that looks or smells spoiled as it’s better to be safe than sorry. More….
