Too Much Animal Protein Ups Diabetes Risk

New research shows the dangers of consuming animal protein, and confirms the results of previous studies which showed a connection between animal protein and risk of diabetes.

Study participants who consumed the most animal protein (78 grams per day) increased their risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 22%, than those who ate the least amount (34 grams per day). Those who ate the most animal protein got it from red meat and processed meat, poultry, fish, and dairy, that are also associated with high levels of fat, cholesterol, and sodium. After accounting for other risk factors, the study concluded that there was a 6% increased risk of diabetes for every additional 10 grams of protein consumed per day.

Researchers suggest replacing animal protein with plant-based protein, such as bean, legumes, lentils, and nut, as these are not linked to diabetes. The study was published in Diabetes Care. More….
