Too Much Salt Increases Heart Disease Risk in Diabetics

Too much salt increases heart disease risk in diabetics, new research shows. Sugar and salt are both dangerous for those with diabetes. While a high salt intake can raise blood pressure in anyone, it can really up the risk of cardiovascular disease in diabetics.

Sixteen hundred participants aged 40 to 70 were surveyed over eight years, and answered questions about their diet and sodium intake. Participants whose intake was 6,000 milligrams a day, doubled their risk of developing heart disease during the study period than those whose average daily intake was 2,800 milligrams a day.

In the study, out of 359 diabetics with high sodium intake, 41 developed heart disease, while only 23 out of 354 with a lower intake did.

The effects of a high-salt diet were worse in patients whose blood sugar levels were poorly managed. More….
