Total Knee Replacements Often Inappropriate

Total knee replacements are often inappropriate, a new study reveals.

Knee replacement surgeries are often recommended as a way to treat pain and improve mobility in patients who have arthritis or have been injured. However, after looking at case histories of 175 patients who underwent this surgery, researchers at Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, found that 34% of the surgeries were inappropriate, 21% were inconclusive, and only 44% were appropriate.

Patients in the “inappropriate surgery’ category had only slight or moderate arthritis symptoms, and there was not enough evidence to support total knee replacements. According to authors of the study, there needs to be a consensus on what criteria are used to determine the need for total knee replacement surgery in patients.
