UV Lamps Used for Gel Manicures Linked to Cancer

UV lamps used for gel manicures may be linked to cancer, according to a new study published in JAMA Dermatology.

Gel manicures are popular because they last longer; what makes them last longer is the drying process, in which the polished nails are exposed to ultraviolet light for five to 10 minutes. Unfortunately,  8 to 14 visits where you’re exposed to UV light can increase the risk of skin cancer.

UV-A is a type of ray that can age and wrinkle the skin, and break DNA strands in skin cells. Doctors suggest reducing the number of gel manicures you get, and to use sunscreen when exposed to the UV lamp. More….
