Vitamin D Deficiency May Cause High Blood Pressure

Vitamin D deficiency may cause high blood pressure. A new study suggests a cause and effect link between vitamin D and hypertension.

Vitamin D is produced when our bodies are exposed to sunshine; we can also make up for any deficiency by eating foods that have been fortified with the vitamin, such as milk and orange juice or by taking supplements.

The study showed that a 10% increase in vitamin D levels led to an 8% decrease in hypertension risk in the participants. According to researchers, the potential of this vitamin as a way to treat high blood pressure is very attractive, given the side effects and costs of standard hypertension medications.

More research is needed to definitively prove that low levels of this vitamin may cause high blood pressure. The study results were published in The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology. More….
