Watch Out, the Pollen Tsunami Is Here – A ferocious winter, delayed spring and even the beginnings of climate change have created what one expert calls a “pollen tsunami” that is slamming allergy sufferers in the Northeast.

Oak and birch trees — the “big bad” pollen makers — are coming out at the same time as the seasonal ones like poplar, alder and ash, and soon the grass pollen will be here, as well. Dr. Clifford Bassett, medical director of Allergy & Asthma Care of New York, says “It’s a triple whammy.” And don’t think you are off scot-free if you live in a big city. Bassett says urban air pollution makes people even more susceptible to allergies.

For allergy sufferers, experts say it’s better to stay indoors if the pollen count in the air is high. Avoid or delegate gardening chores, remove clothes that you’ve worn outside as pollen could stick to them, and experts also recommend rinsing off pollen from your skin and hair.

It’s also important to keep indoor air clean. You can do this by running the air conditioner and keeping the air dry by using a dehumidifier.
