Weight Loss May Prevent Kidney Disease in Diabetics
Weight loss may prevent kidney disease in diabetics, new research shows. Almost 35% of Americans with diabetes end up with kidney disease.
The researchers reexamined data on lifestyle modifications for type 2 diabetics. Participants who were put on a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity lost more weight than those who merely received support and education. Based on a urine test, researchers also found that during the 4-year study period, those in the diet and exercise group had a 31% reduced risk of developing kidney disease.
Though weight-loss recommendations for diabetics are nothing new, the findings about the impact of weight-loss on kidney disease are. Diabetics need to undergo an intense weight-loss and behavioral change program that they can sustain long-term to reduce their risk for kidney disease. More….
