Weight-loss surgery helps in controlling type 2 diabetes, according to new research.

Previous studies have shown that bariatric or gastric bypass surgery can help obese patients to get rid of diabetes at least for a short term. The new study shows that the effects can be long-lasting.

Researchers tracked obese diabetics who had weight-loss surgery, and found that after two years, 72% were in remission, compared to only 16% of those who hadn’t undergone weight-loss surgery. After 15 years, 30% of weight-loss surgery patients continued to show no diabetes symptoms, as opposed to only 7% of the others.

These cases also had fewer complications and showed a drop in strokes and heart attacks, and vision problems like retinopathy and kidney problems. More….
