What Not to Do Before Sleeping – If you suffer from insomnia or other sleep problems, you are probably doing the wrong things before bedtime.

For instance, it’s not a good idea to use an e-reader or smartphone, or watch TV when you’re getting ready to sleep. Research has shown that electronic devices give off a blue light which prevents the production of melatonin, a hormone which helps you sleep. If you have to use some of these devices, make sure you keep them 14 inches from your face and reduce the brightness of the screen.

Some medications could also keep you awake for a long time. For instance, antidepressants can either help you sleep or keep you awake. Pain medications can disrupt your sleep by causing side-effects like stomach problems. Sleeping pills cannot be your best friend over the long-term., as they can cause side-effects like headaches, diarrhea and nausea, daytime drowsiness, and memory problems.

Sleeping with your phone on is also a bad idea. According to the National Sleep Foundation, 10% of teenagers get awakened at night by phone calls, emails or text messages.

Drinking coffee or anything with caffeine in it can prevent you from sleeping. What might help you sleep, instead, are herbal teas, such as chamomile or valerian.
