When You Eat May Affect Your Blood Glucose Levels

When You Eat May Affect Your Blood Glucose Levels – Researchers at Brigham and Women’s Hospital looked at how circadian rhythm affects our blood sugar levels, and found that our bodies are able to regulate our blood sugar levels better after breakfast than after dinner.

For the study, lead author, Frank A. J. L. Scheer and his team studied 14 healthy participants in a lab environment, and monitored them during normal days, when they ate breakfast at 8:00 am an dinner at 8:00 pm and flipped days when participants ate breakfast at 8:00 pm and dinner at 8:00 am and with disrupted sleep.

The team found that for identical meals, glucose levels were 17% higher in the evening than in the morning, regardless of when the participants slept. They also found that night-shift routine, such as sleeping during the day and eating breakfast in the evening, tended to increase glucose levels in the participants after several days.

The study confirms findings from research on night-shift workers that our bodies don’t adjust to the flipped schedule and develop a lower tolerance for glucose.
