FDA Preparing Guidelines on Sodium for Food Companies

The US federal Drug Administration (FDA) is preparing guidelines on sodium for food companies and restaurants, in an effort to make their foods less salty and prevent health problems like high blood pressure, heart disease, and stroke.

According to FDA officials, the current levels of sodium in food is very high, and they can make a huge impact on consumers’ health if they could bring down salt levels in restaurant meals and processed foods. Food companies and restaurants use salt not only to enhance taste but also to preserve food and kill bacteria.

FDA officials believe that a gradual decrease in salt is the way to go, giving time for consumers’ taste buds to adjust. Though health groups want mandatory regulations, the FDA prefers to keep these guidelines voluntary. More….
