Diabetics Consume Too Much Salt

A new study shows that diabetics consume too much salt knowing that too much of it can cause high blood pressure and stroke and cardiovascular disease and despite being at greater risk for these.

Researchers at University of South Australia School of Pharmacy and Medical Science in Adelaide, surveyed Australian adults with type 1 and type 2 diabetes and measured their blood sugar, blood pressure and the amount of sodium in their urine. They found that only a third of the participants knew that salt contains sodium and only 6% were aware of the recommended daily intake for sodium. Over 80% knew that processed foods like bacon and pizza are high in salt, but only 30% knew that white bread and cheese are also high in sodium.

Over 50% of the participants knew that reducing sodium intake can help improve their health but very few listed salt intake as a concern, and those who were health-conscious and read nutrition labels still had high levels of sodium in their urine, showing that many of them consumed excess sodium without knowing.

Hidden sodium in processed foods and processed foods in general seem to be the issue here. Diabetics need to reduce processed foods from their diet and eat “real food’ instead to improve their health. More….
