Of all the exercises I see people doing at the gym, the bench press gets messed up more than almost any other movement. The problem’s not always the same, but most of the time, it’s incorrect setup. People fail to realize that the more stable you are, the more weight you can lift. You can’t just lie down and lift, not paying attention to foot position or back arch. To set up properly, lie down and pull your feet back under you, and plant them firmly on the ground, and keep them there! Don’t start kicking around when you struggle with the weight. Keep your shoulder blades pinched together to stabilize the shoulder, and a small but tight arch in the lower back. This way, you’ll increase stability in your hips, shoulders, and arms, allowing you a smoother, safer lift with more weight, and therefore better results.
