ADHD in Kids Could Be Related to Family Problems

A new study shows that children who have attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) tend to come from troubled families, and experience more trauma than those without ADHD.

Researchers say that physicians may focus on ADHD and ignore trauma caused by family issues like poverty, divorce, drug abuse, which can affect the kind of treatment they provide. Based on a survey of parents of children suffering from ADHD, nearly 12 percent of the kids came from troubled families. Knowledge of family trauma history can help physicians address this issue, and improve ADHD screening and treatment.

The study findings will be presented at the annual meeting of the Pediatric Academic Societies in Vancouver, Canada.More….
