bread pakoda

Use this bread pakoda recipe to make a delicious vegetarian snack in minutes. Make it even more nutritious by using whole-wheat or whole-grain bread instead of white bread. Bread that is 100% whole grain usually contains brown rice and barley, and as such provides more protein, fiber, and other nutrients than multigrain bread which has ingredients like refined flour that are bad for you.

Add bread pakoda to your list of healthy snack ideas.

Servings: 4
Cooking Time: 20 minutes

Ingredients

  • 8 slices of white, whole-wheat, or multigrain bread
  • 1 1/2 cups besan ( bengal gram flour)
  • 1/2 cup rice flour
  • 1/4 cup fine rava (semolina, cream of wheat, sooji)
  • Baking soda, a pinch
  • 1/2 tsp carom seeds (ajwain, vaamu, omam), crushed
  • 1 1/2 tsp red chilli powder
  • Turmeric powder, a pinch
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 1/2 cups water
  • Vegetable oil for deep frying

Preparation

  1. For the bread pakoda batter, mix the besan, rice flour, rava, baking soda, salt, chilli powder, carom seeds and turmeric powder with about 1 1/2 cups of water to form a smooth batter of medium consistency.
  2. Cut each slice of bread into 2 triangles, as for a sandwich.
  3. Heat the oil in a deep frying pan.
  4. When the oil is hot, dip the bread slices into the pakoda batter, making sure both sides of the slices are well-coated and fry the pakodas on medium heat until golden brown.
  5. Serve these nutritious snacks hot, with mint-coriander chutney and hot masala chai or beverage of your choice.
