Carmat’s Artificial Heart Working Well in Second Patient – A second patient who received the French company Carmat’s artificial heart device is doing well eight months after the transplant.

The French company makes an artificial heart device which can be implanted into patients permanently and does not need to be replaced by a human heart. The company has been conducting trials of the device; unfortunately, the first patient, a 76-year-old man who received the artificial heart died two months after the transplant.

The second patient to receive the implant is a 69-year-old man, and in an interview to a French weekly newspaper said, “”I have completely recovered. I can walk, I can get up and I can bend down 10 to 15 times a day without any difficulty,” and that he had never felt so good.

The patient was able to speak for two hours without losing his breath. He does repair work at home and also bikes and does other physical exercise without any problems.

Carmat chooses patients with terminal heart failure for its trials, and is planning to do four more transplants in the coming months. It reported that it made some changes to the heart device after the first patient’s death.
