Cure for Peanut Allergy?

| January 28, 2015 Comment

Cure for Peanut Allergy? Australian researchers may have found a cure for treating peanut allergy, which affects many children and adults worldwide. In the US alone, almost 15 million people suffer from food allergies.

A study conducted by scientists at the Murdoch Childrens Research Institute in Australia, gave 30 allergic children small daily doses of peanut protein with a probiotic (Lactobacillus rhamnosus) in increasing amounts over 18 months. They gave a placebo to a control group of 30 allergic children. They found that over 80% of those receiving the peanut protein with probiotic were able to tolerate peanuts after the study period, whereas, in the placebo group, only 4% were able to do so.

According to lead researcher, Mimi Tang, the kids and their parents are relieved and happy at the results, and say that it has changed their lives. Researchers are planning to follow up with the children to see if years after the study they’re still free of peanut allergy.
