FDA Issues Warning against a Bogus Botox Product – According to the US Food and Drug Administration, a counterfeit botox product may have been supplied to many clinics and doctors’ offices by an unauthorized distributor.

The FDA says the botox products are considered to be unsafe and must not be used as it can’t confirm that the products have been manufactured according to US standards. The agency did not provide information on the distributor, and says that it is not aware of any adverse cases stemming from the fake botox use.

Botox is sold by Allergan, and this product is still safe to use, FDA says. The outer carton and vial of the genuine product displays the active ingredient as “OnabotulinumtoxinA.”

How to identify the fake botox? The counterfeit product is missing some important information, such as the lot number, and dates of manufacture and expiration. Also the ingredient is listed as Botulinum Toxin Type A, instead of OnabotulinumtoxinA.

Botox is a toxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum, and has been approved by FDA to be used as a cosmetic for smoothing wrinkles, to prevent excessive underarm sweating, to treat uncontrolled blinking and migraine.
