FDA Regulating E-Cigarettes

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has come up with a proposal for regulating e-cigarettes, which includes banning the sales of electronic cigarettes to minors.

E-cigarettes are plastic or metal tubes that heat a nicotine solution instead of tobacco, and many use it to quit smoking tobacco. There’s no evidence, however, that it helps smokers quit, or even that it’s safe. The e-cigarette industry has grown very quickly, with sales expected to reach $2 billion in 2013.

There have been growing concerns among consumers over the dangers of such products, and the proposal requires that e-cigarettes be labeled with warnings about nicotine being addictive. Makers of the products are also to register products with the FDA, and to disclose ingredients. Other restrictions would include not using words such as “light, or “mild” and not providing free samples or selling them via vending machines.

The public and members of the industry have 75 days to comment on the proposal. More….
