FDA Warning against Topical Painkillers for Teething

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a warning against topical painkillers for teething pain. According to the FDA, these painkillers contain oral viscous lidocaine two percent solution and should not be prescribed for infants and children, as it can cause harm and even death.

Kids may accidentally swallow too much of the lidocaine solution, if applied too often, and this may cause seizures, severe brain injury, and heart problems. In most cases, the solution may not even be very effective because it can get washed out very quickly.

The FDA has stipulated that a boxed warning about the dangers of lidocaine be used on labels for topical painkillers that contain this solution. Parents should follow guidelines outlined by the American Academy of Pediatrics for treating teething pain, which include using a chilled (not frozen) teething ring, and gently massaging the gums with a finger.
