Grocery Store Secrets – Health coach Carey Peters gives host Judy Greer tips for navigating a grocery store.

Peters talks about the magic plate concept: 1/3 lean protein, 1/3 leafy greens, 1/3 power carbs. These are located on the perimeter of the stores. so start your shopping there.

The ideal kind of produce to look for is organic and local. Organic produce starts with the number “9” in store labeling.

Greens are the most nutrient-dense vegetable. Kale, spinach, and collard greens are good choices.

Kale is rich in antioxidants, anti-inflammatory, and anti-cancer nutrients.

The next thing to look for are healthy, power carbohydrates like sweet potatoes, yams and turnips. Other carbs to look for are whole grains like brown rice and quinoa.

Protein for vegetarians include legumes and lentils.

Recipe for Power Carb Chips

  1. Peel and thinly slice sweet potatoes, yams, parsnips or any root veggies.
  2. Sprinkle with olive oil and sea salt.
  3. Roast at 375°F for 15-20 minutes, turning over once.
